Pin Score Requirements

The JOAD pin awards are based on scores shot at official pin shoots or USA Archery sanctioned events and are a physical symbol of an archer’s increasing skills. Pins are usually displayed on lanyards attached to quivers. Archers who participate in outdoor and indoor JOAD sessions will have separate lanyards since the pin requirements are different for indoor and outdoor archery rounds.

The pin lanyards indicate the archer’s equipment class, so an archer who has earned some pins in the basic compound class and subsequently switches to compound will get a fresh lanyard and start earning pins from the beginning in that equipment class.

Indoor pins #

The green through white pins may be earned shooting at 9 meters or 18 meters. Compound archers who are shooting for their blue pin or higher must use inner 10-ring scoring. All recurve, barebow, basic compound, and fixed pins archers use outer 10-ring scoring. All archers in the adult achievement program shoot 18 meters, and adult compound archers much use inner 10-ring scoring from the beginning.

Outdoor pins #

The pin qualification scores for outdoor vary based on distance and target size. Many pins have multiple distances and qualifying scores. Coaches help each archer determine the appropriate distance and target size for their pin shoot based on the archer’s age and experience.
